Bassist Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Loaded, Walking Papers) dropped by Book Revue in Huntington, New York for an in-store appearance to promote his new book “How To Be a Man (and other illusions)”, discussing fatherhood and his music career as well as signing copies of his book. This is the second book to come from McKagan, who also penned his NY Times Best Seller “It’s So Easy: And Other Lies” in 2011.
Speaking to the crowd at Book Revue, Duff answered questions like how he is dealing with his oldest daughter dating. “I actually welcome another guy in the house,” McKagan, a father of two daughters, expressed. “I’m like ‘Hey Justin, come over! Sports are on!'” When asked if he would allow either of his daughters to date musicians, he paused, which caused the audience to laugh. But, ultimately Duff stated “We’re good people, we just get a bad rap,” also mentioning that his oldest daughter is a musician herself (Grace McKagan fronts The Pink Slips, you can catch their video for “Foxy Feline” here).
“How To Be a Man” illustrates how Duff has balanced his career and home life, creating a happy medium that allows him to thrive; proving to us all that being a “rock star” isn’t about debauchery. It’s about overcoming obstacles to form the best life not only for yourself, but for your family.
And when asked to sum up his extensive career and give his best one-sentence piece of advice? “Just…don’t be a dick.” Might seem like a crude and blunt thing to say, but perhaps sometimes, people need to hear it.
You can pick up a copy of “How To Be a Man (and other illusions)” as well as “It’s So Easy: And Other Lies” at your local book store or on Amazon, where they’re available as a digital downloads as well.
You can catch Duff on his book tour, as well as his performances with Kings of Chaos! Dates listed on his Facebook page.
