Metallica Preceeds the Superbowl With Epic Performance

Metallica proved once again that they are the kings of the live show with a more than impressive setlist for their pre-Superbowl concert at AT&T Park in their hometown of San Francisco.  There may have been outrage over the apparent snubbing of the band, who many expected to be tapped for the halftime show, but as frontman James Hetfield pointed out, this was much better; this was Metallica’s way.  Instead of a strictly-timed, commercialized and censored tease of a concert, Metallica’s “The Night Before” (more appropriately titled “Too Heavy For Halftime” at the beginning of the show) was a veritable music buffet of their best songs.

Opening with “Creeping Death”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, “King Nothing” and “Fuel”, Metallica came out, guns blazing, with the same energy they’ve maintained in their almost 35 years as a band. To watch these guys in action and then realize that they’re in their 50’s makes this 34-year-old feel ashamed for sitting at home in her pajamas at 11:30 on a Saturday night.  Metallica’s live show is incomperable to any musical act you may have seen.

With Hetfield’s promise of an almost-complete album, one can assume that a tour isn’t too far away. Take my advice, do whatever you can, sell off belongings, beg, borrow or steal (ok maybe don’t steal) to get tickets to a Metallica show.  If last night’s show is any indication, these Bay Area boys aren’t slowing down.

You can watch and pre-order “The Night Before/Too Heavy For Halftime” now here
