Metallica is back. Harder than ever, it seems. With their 35th anniversary coming up in October, the Bay Area band released their new single “Hardwired” off of their upcoming album Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, due out November 18th, 2016 (coincidentally, guitarist Kirk Hammett’s birthday). It’s safe to say that their last two studio albums St. Anger and Death Magnetic hadn’t fared as well as one would have hoped. They also had Lulu, a unique collaboration with the late Lou Reed, which was probably the worst-received album in Metallica’s catalogue. James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Rob Trujillo and Lars Ulrich have been locked away in their HQ studio creating what is seemingly going to be a balls-to-the-wall album, filled with anxiety-inducing drumming and insane guitar riffs and solos. If cynics the world over have been dwelling over “old school Metallica” and still pulling out their “sell-out” and “Metallica vs. Napster” cards, “Hardwired” is sure to be a slap in the face to knock some sense into them. “Hardwired” has the ingredients of “old school Metallica” but somehow — if at all possible for you cynics– it’s better.
