Emerging Artist Spotlight – Interview with Lil Polearm

By Faith Richardson

Music producer, Lil Polearm,  is currently garnering much interest on SoundCloud.   While amassing thousands of listeners, and collaborating with other artists, Lil Polearm is on the way up.  We had a chance to catch up with him and here is what he had to say.

What made you start creating music?

I actually started over 2 years ago making lofi hiphop under halberd after I heard tomppabeats’ harbor LP! I always made normal trap beats on the side but I never really used them or posted them anywhere, but in January of this year I really started recording my own songs completely. I made maybe 2 or 3 before that but those are long gone LOL

How has music influenced you

Music has been a part of my life for a very long time. I took piano for around 10 years before quitting to teach myself guitar when I hit my emo phase and I was too cool for classical music LOL. I’ve since changed over to jazz bass for school! The music theory stuck with me so I was able to put it to good use years later.

Who are some of the artists that have shaped your sound?

Oliver Francis was for sure the one who inspired me to start rapping in the first place, I find us to be similar, because we’re both from the middle of nowhere and we’re (mostly) self produced. In terms of writing style, mostly punk bands influenced that area. Usually pretty simple writing that’s not that deep. I prefer overall sound over lyricism, like if it *sounds* good, then it’s probably good. I kind of change who influences me a lot because there’s so many and I can’t give an insane list so this time I’ll throw in Lil Uzi, Sybyr, Bladee, and Young Thug.

Besides music, what are some of your other interests?

If I’m not mixing other people’s songs or working on my own stuff, I’m usually playing rainbow six with some of my music friends. I don’t really have time for much else to be honest, and I’m still in high school so that takes up most of my days.

If you were to go on tour, who would you like to join you?

I would definitely bring Afternoon with me, but I would also try and include all of my internet music friends along each city if they live close, so the openers would be different almost every show.

What are your current plans for growing your fan base?

I’m gonna be dropping a tape pretty soon! I was almost done but I ended up scrapping half of it so I’m probably gonna make maybe 2 or 3 more songs but I have no idea how long it’ll take because I rarely have time to record nowadays. There won’t be any features either, except maybe a bonus track that’s already released but I’m not sure if that counts LOL. It’s mostly self produced too!

Where do you hope to see your music career in the future?

I really hope to just keep growing exponentially, my lofi hiphop has almost reached the point that I can pay for all of my college and a gap year to go live wherever with some friends, Atlanta, Chicago, LA, whatever they want as long as I can move away from where I am right now LOL.
