Legendary 90’s rock band, Stone Temple Pilots, stopped by Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds Casinos on June 1st. The band is on tour supporting their latest eponymous album, and the Michigan date was one of the last U.S. dates before the band heads to Europe.
I had previously been to a few STP concerts with former front-man Scott Weiland. The band had also performed with Chester Bennington before inviting Michigan native, Jeff Gutt, to join as the permanent lead singer. I have been a fan of Stone Temple Pilots since the release of Core back in 1992. I was not sure how I would feel about seeing the guys with a new member. Any fear I had disappeared the moment Jeff began belting out the lyrics to “Wicked Garden.” Gutt not only embodied Weiland’s vocal style, but also his stage presence, and kept just enough of his own style to set him apart.
STP plowed through all of their greatest hits like “Crackerman,” “Vasoline,” “Big Bang Baby,” and “Interstate Love Song.” The band took sometime to play a few of their new songs like “Meadow,” which stays true to the band’s primal sound. By the time the last notes of “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart ” were played, I was sold. I wanted more. STP is still as great as they always were. Their 2018 album is now on my “next to download” short list and if you are lucky enough to be in a town where they are playing, go see them!
