Music icons, Huey Lewis and The News, performed Friday, September 8th at the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Michigan. This was just the latest stop on their North American tour celebrating over 30 years of their catapulting album, Sports.
Huey and the gang took the stage, without an opening act, right after 9 PM and began the show with the infamous heartbeat that precedes “The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and then plowed right in to “I Want a New Drug”. The show remained energy intense and had almost every fan in the Silver Creek Event Center on their feet by the time the first chords of “Back in Time” reverberated through venue. The boys were real crowd-pleasers, performing not only their nostalgic hits, but also a fantastic harmonizing acappella mix halfway through the set and a new bluesy diddy, “Her Love is Killing Me”.
The single encore started intense with ” The Power of Love” complete with heavy bass shaking the floor and Huey asking, “can you feel it?” The show wrapped up with “Stuck With You” and a horn and harmonica heavy “Working For a Livin'”
I had to Google Mr. Lewis’ age during the show as I couldn’t believe how youthful his persona and energy were. Realizing this man was close to 70 years old gave me new respect for him and his music. He performed a high energy show without missing a beat and his voice remained true to the 1980s airwaves version. You can still catch the band on the road at one of their North American dates before they set off for Japan in November.
